October meeting

Just to let you know that this group does not consist of all ghosts as suspected.
The meeting at the George and Dragon was attended by three people who believed the above to be true.
We had Stuart and Chris from Stafford and myself.
It was a good icebreaker and we decided to meet there again when we three are free to guarantee a meeting. We will let you know the date.

I got in touch with the lug masters at the UKLUG website and requested
that they re-add us to the lists of LUGs this has now been done. We are

Hi All,
Just thought I'd introduce myself - I'm a final year computing student
at Staffs. I've been using Linux on and off for the last five years -
Ubuntu for the last two.
I found this lug hard to find because I've been browsing lug.org.uk and
it's not listed. Some seemingly dead Staffs group is instead. Whats the
difference between the two?
What does this group get up too? Are there any meets planned?

ADSL group for voluntary group

Hello,
Anyone within easy reach of Stafford looking to do a good turn? ;-)
Before the end of the MOST project, we supplied some kit
to a small voluntary group in Stafford. The group did not at
the time have broadband.
Now they have ADSL, and a USB ADSL modem which is non-trivial
for a new computer user to configure for GNU/Linux - e.g.:

[They have a laptop running Ubuntu Dapper.]
It would actually be better for them to have an ethernet router
of course. :-/
Does anywhere in Stafford sell them at appropriate (GBP20-ish)
prices? Does anyone have a spare since upgrading to wireless?
I can't get out to Stafford for the next couple of weeks. Is anyone
local able to help them with a short visit?
Please let me know if you can, and I'll send the contact details
off-list.

Adorea the Fedora?

Hello one and all, hope we are all well?
Well.. Ive had an interesting evening trying to install the new Fedora
(zod) onto my laptop..
It was the normal 32-bit version (64-bit is still downloading at this
point in time). Now, my laptop is a 64-bit machine, but Ive never had any
trouble installing a 32-bit ver before (I mean, I quickly installed SuSE
onto it, which informed me that it was going to install a 32-bit OS onto a
64-bit system, but still worked perfectly well)..
Ok, get to the point I hear you type.. Well.. The install fires up
perfectly (both text and graphical), but for some reason the installer
somehow disables the fan, which in-turn shuts down as it gets a bit hot
under the collar..
Well.. To answer your question that has you fan just packed up, the
answer is no, as when I installed SuSE the fan kicked in, turning on and
off happily.
Just wondered really if anyone has come across this before?

I have just been to see a chap who had offered some old PC's on
Freecycle. I went along expecting old, old PC's.... 386's and
possibly 486's if I was lucky. :-)))) well, I came away with 3 PC's
which although old are most certainly usable with Linux as two have
1.7ghz CPU's and the other I don't yet know but it's better. I also
got a nice little server of as yet unknown spec'. The guy had got
scanners, HP multi function office set ups (printer, scanner, copier
combined) and a load of monitors. It is quite amazing what turns up
:-)
At the very least I can now do some serious upgrading to my various units.
